Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose (HPMC) is a cellulose polymer that has been chemically modified from either wood pulp or cotton plant material. It is non-ionic, biodegradable, and very versatile.

The thickening action of HPMC is a result of the hydrating and gelling properties of this polymer. When mixed with water, the polymer chains of HPMC hydrate and swell, trapping water molecules and forming a three-dimensional structure that increases the viscosity of the solution.

Several factors influence the thickening efficiency of HPMC:

Concentration – The greater the concentration of HPMC, the greater the viscosity.

Molecular Weight – Polymers that have a greater molecular weight have a greater capacity for thickening.

Degree of Substitution – The addition of hydroxypropyl and methyl groups influences solubility and viscosity.

Temperature – HPMC demonstrates thermal gelation behavior meaning it can form a gel when heated and return to liquid upon cooling.

Industrial Uses of HPMC as a Thickener

1. Construction

In construction, materials must be workable, durable, and uniform. HPMC is used in many industrial settings such as cement, mortar, tile adhesives, and gypsum-based products to impart these properties.

HPMC improves water retention so that the mixture does not dry out too quickly. HPMC also improves open time (length of time a material is considered workable) adhesive bond strength, and workability.

Also, HPMC inhibits the segregation of the components in the initial blend, confirming that each batch is consistent from start to finish. This permits ease of use and consistency and impacts the structural integrity of the finished system.

2.  Paints and Coatings

Viscosity is important for the properties in paints such as spread ability, sag resistance, leveling, and other performance characteristics, and HPMC aids in viscosity control to assist paint manufacturers control the flow and spread of paints by using HPMC as a rheology modifier.

Similarly, it aids in pigment suspension and does this with pigments while allowing for even distribution and even prevention of sedimentation and allowing for uniformity of color and texture.

Also, because HPMC is non-ionic, HPMC has no adverse reactivity in paints that may cause a detrimental effect and confirms the paint also maintains stability/quality in-situ.

3.  Pharmaceutical Industry

In the pharmaceutical sector, HPMC has many different uses including as a thickening agent in syrups, as a thickening agent in topical gels, and as a thickening agent in eye drops.

It provides a smooth consistency/produce a solute that can easily be disseminated or consumed by the subject.

Additionally, HPMC can be used as a film former when used as a coating agent for tablets, as the film can protect the overall tablet itself from moisture and provide another layer of protection.

HPMC is also commonly used with controlled release formulations. After being ingested, HPMC forms a gel layer that slows the release of the active pharmaceutical ingredient (API). This results in a prolonged delivery of drug over time. For chronic treatments, it is often important for delivery to be consistent.

4. Personal Care and Cosmetics

HPMC is used in personal care items (shampoos, conditioners, lotions, creams, etc.) as a thickener and stabilizer. As a result, it provides a rich smooth texture that gives the user a better experience.

Since HPMC is non-toxic and a hypoallergenic, it can be used for sensitive skin and usually in baby ness products.

Its ability to maintain viscosity over broad temperatures and pH ranges makes it stable in formulations that require longevity.

5. Food Industry

While it may seem surprising, HPMC is also used in food processing as a thickener, emulsifier, and stabilizer. You would find it in salad dressings, sauces, dessert toppings and also low-fat ice creams.

In gluten-free baking, HPMC replaces the gluten and provides the dough with the required elasticity and viscosity of gluten, which improves the texture and volume of the gluten-free baked product. HPMC is also used in vegan-friendly foods as a vegetarian substitute for gelatin and other animal-based thickeners.

6. Cleaning Products

A variety of commercial and household cleaners need to cling well to a surface long enough to dissolve the dirt and grime.

HPMC thickens these formulations by converting them into a more viscous formulation, resulting in greater surface contact over which the product can perform, and therefore greater cleaning efficiency.

In liquid detergent formulations, HPMC thickens the formulations, prevents phase separation, and improves the aesthetic quality of the product.

4. Stable Over Time

HPMC’s thickening capacity does not change depending on up to very high levels of pH and temperature; it is also some what resistant to microbial decay, providing a long shelf life.

5. Compatibility

Being non-ionic means that HPMC would not crosslink or react with other charged molecules. This renders it compatible with almost all ingredients used in industrial formulations.

HPMC is sourced from renewable characteristics and is biodegradable, making its use safer for human and environmental health; HPMC is also approved by the FDA for use in food- and pharmaceutical-based products in the kitchen and/or our medicine cabinets…

As there is a growing demand for sustainable, functional, and effective ingredients in various industrial applications, HPMC is a natural fit. Its multiple functionality means not needing to incorporate as many additives into a product, thereby decreasing manufacturing costs and increasing productivity.

Globally, HPMC is seeing exponential growth in market share, led by its various uses in construction (particularly in emerging economies), pharmaceuticals, and food products.

The movement towards green and sustainable initiatives is being propelled by the increased usage of biodegradable and plant-based ingredients such as HPMC.
